On Tupac Video Set, Nas Says Rapper Better Than Shakespeare
12.03.2002 4:14 PM EST

Nas

When Nas got the call to appear on Tupac's new Better Dayz, there was no question he jumped at the chance. Even though the slain rapper dissed him on record, the king of Queensbridge has remained a fan.

"That was something I've been waiting to do for a long time," Nas said Monday in Atlanta on the set of the "Thugz Mansion" video. "It's a tremendous honor because I put Tupac beyond Shakespeare. Unfortunately his early demise didn't allow him to still be here and do more incredible things. The things he left are timeless. Just to be a part of that is an honor for me." (

Nas appears on the acoustic guitar remix of the "Thugz Mansion." A version with two Tupac verses and one Nas verse appears on Better Dayz, and the ratio is flipped for the version on Nas' God's Son, due December 17 (see
"Nas Joined By Eminem, Admits Rivalry With Biggie On God's Son").

"As soon as I heard it, I was with it," Nas recounted during downtime. "It was something I wanted to do with just a guitar playing, not really drums something you could hear the words [on]. I was looking forward to doing something like that for my album, so when I heard [Tupac] doing it and the things he was saying, I was like, 'Damn!' It goes to show how he was one of the most incredible poets. It couldn't have been a better song at a better time.

"The concept of the song is somewhere to go where there's no problems," he added. "Everywhere we go, there's a problem. Everywhere I turn I'm hearing my name this way and that way. It's always an issue on all types of levels. Just being a human is hard. 'Thugz Mansion' is like exactly what the title says it's heaven."

Nas said working with director David Nelson (Coolio, Naughty by Nature) on "Thugz Mansion" was a different experience than shooting the video for his own single, "Made You Look" (see
"Nas Goes To The Streets, Shoots Guerilla-Style Video").

" 'Made You Look' was basically about me in my element, in my city, New York City, on the streets. You always wanna capture New York on film. There ain't nothing like it. It ain't really been captured in a while. A lot of videos are glossy with the cars and girls with the bikinis. It's real fly, but I wanted to take it back to the streets. ['Thugz Mansion'] was artistic, a lot more artistic. It's a whole different vibe. Being that the brother Pac is not here physically, there's different techniques going into shooting the video to make sure it's done the right way."

Timberlake Breaks Foot, Cancels Two Weeks Of Appearances
11.19.2002 2:24 PM EST

Justin Timberlake

Justin Timberlake now has a broken limb to match the broken heart he sings about on Justified.

'NSYNC's first solo star broke his foot earlier this week while rehearsing for several upcoming television performances and has canceled all promotional events scheduled for the next two weeks. Details on how the injury occurred were not available.

"I am sorely disappointed that I must miss any scheduled events," Timberlake said in a statement. "However, I must adhere to my physician's recommendations and rest. I look forward to being able to perform again and hope to see all my fans soon."

Timberlake will miss an appearance Wednesday at Much Music's "Live@Much" and a co-hosting and performing gig Sunday at the Smash Hits Poll Winners Party in London, among other events.

Timberlake is still scheduled to perform at the Billboard Music Awards on December 9 in Las Vegas. The singer said recently he will not tour behind Justified until next summer (see "Timberlake Will Tour, But Not Until Summer").

More Music From '8 Mile' Due On Second Soundtrack
11.22.2002

Eminem

Eminem is hoping to stretch his chart-topping success another mile.

Although it won't feature any music from the rapper, a second soundtrack from "8 Mile" will be released December 3.

Unlike the first soundtrack, which featured music "inspired by" the movie, More Music From '8 Mile' will feature music actually in the movie.

Since "8 Mile" takes place in 1995, songs on the second soundtrack include hits from that time, like Wu-Tang Clan's "C.R.E.A.M.," Notorious B.I.G.'s "Juicy," and Method Man and Mary J. Blige's "You're All I Need."

The first soundtrack spent two weeks atop the Billboard 200 albums chart and has sold more than 1.6 million copies. It features five songs with Eminem, including the massive single "Lose Yourself," along with new tracks from Jay-Z, Nas and others (see "Eminem Writes From Rabbit's Perspective For '8 Mile' Album").

After two weeks, "8 Mile" has made more than $86 million at the box office (see "Harry Potter's Spell Turns Eminem Into Rabbit Stew").

More Music From '8 Mile' track list, according to Interscope Records:

  • Mobb Deep - "Shook Ones, Pt. 2"

  • Notorious B.I.G. - "Juicy"

  • MC Breed f/ 2Pac - "Gotta Get Mine"

  • Naughty by Nature - "Feel Me Flow"

  • Outkast - "Player's Ball"
